Since 1995, the Department of English Studies has been functional as one of the three departments that constitute the Institute of English and American Studies, and also as one of the largest departments at the University of Szeged. Relying on the achievements of its predecessor, the former Department of English Language and Literature, our department has been successful in establishing its national and international reputation by high quality research and teaching activities, projects and frameworks of cooperation. The careers of our graduates, our specialization programs, publications and international conferences are indicative of the wide spectrum of academic fields that the members of our faculty specialize in.
The Department of English Studies is responsible for the operation of the BA Program in English Studies as well as the MA Program which carries three specialization tracks: English Applied Linguistics, Interdisciplinary Study of Culture, Gender through Literatures and Cultures in English.

It is with deep sorrow and regret for us to have found out about the sudden, unbelievable death of Jack (aka Jon) Roberts. It is also especially devastating for us because he was a truly great person, colleague and friend. Jon was Professor of English at Saint Thomas Aquinas College in NY State and a Fulbright Lecturer in American Studies at the University of Szeged for 2002/2003. He taught courses in classical and contemporary American fiction as well as pragmatism and poetics. He continued to return to Szeged to lecture on literature and terrorism and has served as an examiner on several Ph.D.s.
His memory will remain with us, in the Institute's classrooms, at the cafes and on the streets of Szeged, the city he loved so much.
